    "body": "### Problem\n\nThe Search API docs (https://openlibrary.org/dev/docs/api/search, \"Getting edition information\") say:\n\n> You can add `&editions.sort` to override the default relevance logic and instead sort by a specific field.\n\n`/search.json` ignores the parameter. Every value, including an invalid one, returns 200 with the same edition as a request without it. The HTML `/search` page honours it on prod.\n\nCause: `SearchRequestParams` in `openlibrary/fastapi/search.py` has no `editions.sort` field, and `selected_query` only forwards the fields of `PublicQueryOptions` and `WorkSearchScheme`. FastAPI drops undeclared query parameters, so `_prepare_solr_query_params` (`openlibrary/plugins/worksearch/code.py`, `param.get(\"editions.sort\")`) never sees it. The comment above `public_scan` in `PublicQueryOptions` describes the same failure for those two parameters.\n\nAs of commit e530056f, the old web.py `search_json` handler (`openlibrary/plugins/worksearch/code.py`) passed every query argument to `work_search`, so it honoured the parameter (read from the code, not run).\n\n`editions.sort` was added in #8250. For `/search?q=crime+and+punishment&editions.sort=<value>&mode=everything`, the first result (`/works/OL166894W`) links to `/books/OL56178734M` (1866) for `old`, `/books/OL60849673M` (2025) for `new`, and `/books/OL37044740M` (2017) with no sort.\n\nLocal check on master at 337c0605 (Python 3.14.8, fastapi 0.143.0, pydantic 2.13.4), with `openlibrary.plugins.worksearch.code.execute_solr_query_async` patched to capture the params sent to Solr:\n\n```\nGET /search.json?q=crime+and+punishment&fields=key,editions&editions.sort=old\n  -> HTTP 200; editions.sort sent to Solr: None\nrun_solr_query_async(WorkSearchScheme(lang=\"en\", solr_editions=True), {\"q\": \"crime and punishment\", \"editions.sort\": \"old\"}, fields=[\"key\", \"editions\"])\n  -> sent to Solr: editions.sort=def(field(publish_year, min), 9999) asc\n```\n\nWorkaround: the `query` JSON parameter (not in the docs) is passed through whole. On prod, `/search.json?query={\"q\":\"crime and punishment\",\"editions.sort\":\"old\"}&limit=1&fields=key,editions,editions.key,editions.publish_year` returns `/books/OL56178734M` (1866), and `\"new\"` returns `/books/OL60849673M` (2025).\n\n### Context\n\n- Browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc): curl 8.7.1\n- OS (Windows, Mac, etc): macOS 27.0.1 arm64\n- Logged in (Y/N): N\n- Environment (prod, dev, local): prod (openlibrary.org, 2026-10-16, latest deploy tag `deploy-2026-10-15-at-22-14`) and local master @ 337c0605\n\n### Breakdown\n\n<details>\n<summary><strong>Implementation Details</strong> (for maintainers)</summary>\n\nIn `SearchRequestParams`, add `editions_sort: str | None = Field(None, alias=\"editions.sort\")`. Validate it against `EditionSearchScheme.sorts`, as `EditionSortOption` does for `/search/editions.json`. That type is defined further down the module, so either move it up or use a `field_validator`. In `selected_query`, copy the value into the dict: `q[\"editions.sort\"] = self.editions_sort`.\n\nI tried this on a local copy of master at 337c0605. `old`, `new`, `title` and `ebook_access` reach Solr as `def(field(publish_year, min), 9999) asc`, `publish_year desc`, `title_sort asc` and `ebook_access desc`. `bogus` returns 422.
